What is the Transformative Coaching method? We begin with the view that a person has unlimited potential which exists in his authentic being or true self. Everyone is born with this authentic being who knows exactly what it wants and how to get it. A perfect example of this is a baby who cries when it is hungry in order to be fed or a little boy who knows how to charm up his parents when he wants a new toy. However, as we grow up and get influenced by our external ecology, including parental, social-economic, and educational factors, we develop a separate self- concept that is based on certain expectations and behavioral patterns. Let’s call this our personality. Our personality has learned various survival tools based on making judgments and decisions that it perceives will further its goals. However, this personality, which is ego based, can often get in our way of achieving optimal performance and reaching our full potential because of its self-critical and judgmental nature. A good example of this is a golfer who is constantly trying to correct his swing by focusing on the do’s and don’ts, but ends up in total frustration as the ball refuses to follow a straight trajectory. This mental control and rigidity actually create a resistance from having a good swing. This same golfer, when he finally relaxes and stops the self doubt and analysis of his swing, is able to better focus and achieve a natural swing which results in a hole in one. The difference is in the first case, the golfer was operating from his personality while in the second case, he was operating from his true self who naturally knows how to swing and remains focused because of the lack of resistance caused by self-critique. This letting go of control through trusting the true self is what brings out the peak performance in athletes, artists, and executives. Top athletes often call it being in the flow or in the zone. In spiritual terms, it is being in the Zen state or flowing with the Tao when everything is working out perfectly without any resistance. The goal of Transformative Coaching is to help you access your true self in order to optimize your performance and desired outcomes at work and in other areas of your life. When you allow your true self to be more present without the critical interference of your personality, you are able to achieve phenomenal results because you enter in to the flow state where you have focus without resistance. Our approach consists of the following steps that are carried out over the course of the coaching assignment. “The journey of a thousand miles begins with the first step”. Lao Tzu Step 1 - Access Your True SelfThis first step is central to the Transformative Coaching method. Unless you truly know who you are, how will you know what you really want? How can you set goals for yourself and your organization that are in alignment with your personal vision and values? During this step, the coach guides you through the process of becoming conscious of your true self as separate from your personality. The coach mentors you to reach a level of self-realization where you will be able to define the characteristics, qualities, and values that make up the core of who you are as a person and as an executive. Step 2 - Define Your Vision and GoalsFrom the perspective of your true self, the coach assists you in defining your own life’s vision and goals as well as your vision and goals for the company or department. This involves learning to live your life as a vision and live the vision that you have set for your company or department. You may find yourself redefining your existing goals in order to formulate new ones that are more in alignment with your true self, vision, and values. Step 3 – Review and AssessmentThis process involves identifying the resistance in your current situation that is preventing you from achieving your vision and goals in life and at work. This gap assessment will allow you to target both internal and external factors that are interfering with your performance. Once you are aware of those areas of resistance, the coach works with you to release the resistance so that you can perform at your optimal level and be more in the flow state. Step 4 - Develop the Action PlanThis step involves the coach and you developing an action plan with specific and measurable behaviors and outcomes that are in alignment with your vision and goals. You will find yourself implementing your action plan with a lot more ease and effectiveness because you would have gotten rid of the resistant set of behaviors and issues that were preventing you from achieving your goals. The coach works with you in exploring different options in order to reach the optimal set of solutions and decisions. Step 5 – Accountability and FeedbackThe coach will follow up with you at each session to support you in your accountability in implementing the various steps of your action plan. He will also give you feedback on your progress and discuss new issues that arise as you implement your plan. This mentoring process gives you a personal and professional support system that empowers you to be more effective in life and at work as well as to reach your full potential. Step 6- Review ResultsAt the end of the coaching assignment, the coach and you do a final assessment of your progress and success of attaining the goals you set for yourself. The coach will suggest how you can continue to apply the Transformative Coaching method without a coach as you define new goals you want to attain or new areas of resistance you want to release. At the end of the process, you should be feeling deep satisfaction and fulfillment on reaching a level of peak performance, achievement of your goals, and self-realization. Each coaching assignment is customized to meet your specific needs and requirements. You agree with your coach on the specific goals and outcomes you desire from the Transformative Coaching sessions. The flexibility in the Transformative Coaching approach allows you to focus more on certain areas of concerns than others. As the relationship with your coach is based on mutual trust, respect, and confidentiality, you will have the opportunity to express your inner thoughts and feelings, thus giving a voice to your true self and allowing it to be more present in your life and in your work. |
